What is modern design?

Modern style decoration Modern design is an interior design style characterized by a monochromatic color palette, clean lines, minimalism, natural materials and natural light. It specifically refers to a historical aesthetic movement that occurred in the early to mid-20th century. Although often confused with – or used interchangeably with – the term ‘contemporary design’, modern design is its own distinct style.

In order for you to better understand the difference between the two, we have included all the defining elements of modern design in this article and how it differs from contemporary design.

A brief history of modern design

Modern design consists of a specific time period that includes the early to mid-20th century. This style originated at the turn of the century with the movement toward industrialization, rooted in German and Scandinavian designs, and gained popularity during the first half of the century.

Both mid-century modern design (popular from the 40s to 60s) and postmodern design (from the 70s onwards) evolved from modern design. Los Angeles-based interior designer Natalie Myers says, “Mid-century modernism was the future. It harnessed the ability of machinery to bring affordable housing and furniture solutions to the masses. It was conscious architecture, interiors, furniture and art.”

One of the key beliefs of the modern design movement is the idea that “form follows function.” In other words, the design of all fixtures and decorative objects should reflect their intended purpose, and if a piece of furniture, decor or decorative detail does not. It has no practical purpose, so it can be deleted.

New technologies, industrialization and access to building materials such as steel and concrete also informed modern art and architecture from the 1920s to the early 1950s. Smooth lines, floor-to-ceiling windows, open living spaces, and flat ceilings became the dominant style of this era.

By the end of World War II, young architects had begun to criticize the extreme nature of minimalism. In the 1960s, minimalist sensibilities began a rebirth of ornamentation and postmodernism. However, the legacy of modernism continues to live on in iconic buildings and as inspiration for contemporary architecture.

What are the defining elements of modern design ?

* Clean lines

Design styles before modern design were Gothic, Renaissance and Victorian styles. They included heavy textures, decorations and lots of dark and dramatic elements. Modern design rejected these aspects in favor of clean, straight lines, uncluttered spaces, and a general lack of clutter.

* Neutral colors

White, beige, and even some shades of black make up the main color palette for modern design (with a few exceptions). While it can incorporate colors as accents, these tend to lean more toward earth tones. Since modern design puts so much emphasis on natural materials, keeping things to a more neutral color palette is key. “Clean lines over curves. Neutral colors and natural materials over bold colors, synthetics and patterns,” says Myers.

* Natural materials

The era of modern design brought new materials for making furniture. Steel, plywood, and plastic were all used in place of or alongside wood. For modern designers, the goal was to strike a balance between pure functionality and aesthetics. Furniture should be functional but still attractive. However, the ingredients varied by region.

As designers Charles and Ray Eames experimented with plastic in America (and created the iconic mid-century modern Eames lounge chair) and Marcel Breuer in Germany used steel to create the iconic Wassily chair in 1925, for example, the modernists In Brazil, they looked at local and natural. Wood in many of their furniture.

* Low and tall furniture

Modern furniture has a low and high view. The Eames lounge chair is a prime example. Made of plywood and leather in 1956, it was inspired by English club chairs and the worn comfort of a baseball glove. The furniture was also simplified, like Iro Saarinen’s tulip chair. As one of the most popular pieces of modern furniture today, this chair only had one central leg made of fiberglass reinforced resin. Saarinen’s goal with this design was to clear up the “ugly confusing world” caused by traditional chair legs. His solution was a simple perception that came to define this era.

* Open concept plan

Modern design prefers as few walls as possible. Instead, furniture differentiates spaces, such as a kitchen counter that creates a visual distinction from a living room or dining room.

* Natural light

Plenty of natural light is also essential to help the space feel more airy and open, so windows are kept unadorned.

What is the difference between modern and contemporary design?

Contemporary design refers to today’s style. It is impossible to define it as a specific period because contemporary design is constantly evolving. It is a reflection of the present and will probably look very different 50 years from now. “What might be considered contemporary now can be a fleeting trend or it can make a lasting impression that will transcend the era,” says interior designer Kathy Hodges.
